A Memory That Became History...
Before BreyerFest became the bucket-list event it is today, there was Model Horse Congress — the first large-scale gathering of model horse enthusiasts from across the country. Held in the 1970s and early '80s, Congress was where the hobby came alive in person for the very first time — through showing, trading, learning, and simply being in the company of others who shared the same deep love for these miniature equine works of art.
It was the event that set the stage for everything to follow — and there's no doubt it helped inspire what would later become BreyerFest.
In 1982, this beautiful Red Roan Running Mare was released as a special run by Bentley Sales Company at Model Horse Congress. Holding her now brings back so many memories that, at the time, just felt like good fun… but looking back, I realize I was lucky enough to be part of something truly historic in the hobby.
Later, I had the honor of attending the very first BreyerFest in 1990, when it launched at the Kentucky Horse Park. That was just the beginning of what became a lifetime of unforgettable experiences, dear friendships, and a growing collection of model horses — each one tied to a special moment in time.
Here’s a photo of the Bentleys from the 1982 Model Horse Congress — the year they debuted the Red Roan Running Mare as a special run. If you were around back then, you probably remember how sweet and down-to-earth they were. Buying a new horse from Bentley Sales wasn’t just shopping — it was an experience. They always had a smile, kind words, and made you feel like part of something special. Their table was the place everyone wanted to visit, and I’ll always remember how exciting and personal it felt to add a new model to my herd thanks to them.
I never imagined as a young collector that this hobby would bring such joy, purpose, and connection. From Congress to BreyerFest and beyond, these aren’t just plastic ponies — they’re pieces of our personal and shared history.
Some moments in the hobby come and go, but others leave a lasting imprint — and I’m so grateful to have lived through this one, with people who made it truly unforgettable.
