Back in 1984
Back in 1984, the model horse hobby looked a little different. Sales lists were typed on manual typewriters, and every transaction happened through good old-fashioned snail mail. From the moment you wrote to ask if something was still available, to the happy day you received confirmation that your payment had made it through, it was a slow process—yet full of anticipation.
One of the brightest sparks in that era was Marney Walerius. When her sales list arrived, it felt like Christmas morning. She had a special connection with Breyer at the time, and her offerings included some truly amazing collectibles. The race was on to hope you received her list in time and could claim a treasure before it was gone.
I still have a sales list I received from her in 1984. That year, I was beyond thrilled to purchase the Arabian Stallion in the leopard Appaloosa performance horse color (test color). For decades, he was the crown jewel of my collection, and every treasure hunt felt worth it because of him.
Today, I just want to take a moment to remember Marney—her enthusiasm, her generosity, and the way she made the hobby feel like a shared adventure. She left an indelible mark on so many of us, and I’m grateful for the joy she brought into those early collecting days.
