Weekly Topics for Our Customizing Community
Over the coming weeks I will be sharing a series of short discussion articles focused on different aspects of model horse customizing. Each post will be pinned to the top of the group (and numbered by topic) so it will be easy to find later in the Featured section.
The goal is not to lecture or claim expertise. The goal is to create useful conversations where everyone can learn from each other.
If you customize models, restore them, sculpt on them, paint them, or simply enjoy seeing the process, you are welcome to participate in every discussion.
Please feel free to share:
• your own experience
• photos of your work
• tools or materials you like to use
• links to your studio or page
• helpful references
• questions or advice for others
These posts are meant to be discussion threads where members can exchange knowledge and ideas. The customizing community has a huge range of experience levels and techniques, and everyone approaches the process a little differently.
Each week we will explore a different topic.
Planned Topics
• Material Differences Between Plastic and Resin Models
A discussion about how factory plastic models and artist resin models behave differently when sanding, carving, priming, or modifying them.
• Preparing a Model Before Customizing
Cleaning, surface prep, and the small steps that help paint and sculpt materials adhere properly.
• Common Structural Problems
Warped legs, seam lines, broken ears, and other challenges customizers often encounter and how people approach fixing them.
• Sculpting Additions
Adding manes, tails, or other sculpted changes using epoxy or other sculpting materials.
• Using Reference Material
How artists use anatomy books, photos, and observation of real horses when planning a customization.
• Tools of the Trade
Carving tools, sanding tools, rotary tools, lighting, and other equipment people find useful.
• Workspace Setups
How different artists organize their customizing space, from small desks to full studios.
• Learning Through Mistakes
The experiments, unexpected results, and lessons that help artists improve over time.
• Favorite Models to Customize
Which factory models people enjoy working on and why certain molds are good bases for customization.
• Before and After Transformations
Seeing the process of how a factory model becomes something entirely new.
• Why People Customize Models
The creativity and personal reasons behind transforming a model horse into something unique.
Looking forward to seeing everyone’s ideas, techniques, and experiences as we explore these topics together.
The first discussion post will hopefully be coming later today. You are also welcome to use this thread to suggest additional topics that could be added to the future discussion schedule.
We are also excited to share that from time to time, when fun customizing challenges arise in these discussions, we will be happy to provide free model bodies for participants. These will be available for the cost of shipping only. Participation is always optional. Anyone who simply enjoys watching the process and seeing the results is just as welcome to follow along and enjoy the discussions.
This offer will begin once our current shipping delays are fully resolved, which should be very soon. At that time, we will also be catching up on the administrative work for the open customization contests we have hosted in the past, and those contests will resume as well. The goal is for the discussions, challenges, and contests to complement each other and give everyone more ways to participate and enjoy the creative process.
