Dandy Poe Rocket is my heart horse.
I saved up $100 to buy him as a weanling when I was in 8th grade. He taught me all I know about horses My ex and I raised, trained, bred and showed horses, we had 23 head when we dispersed, and none replaced Dandy in my heart. Dandy forgave me my mistakes.
I took him to college with me and I rode him in goat tying, breakaway roping and barrels as part of the North Dakota State University rodeo team. Then, in my senior year, he foundered. We still don't know why our what or how. So, I gave him to a family I knew well and they said they would try and rehab him through it because the Dad was a farrier.
I ended up in vet school, then moving to Nebraska and Dandy had recovered pretty well but he'd never be a competition horse again, so he lived to be 28 carting their kids around the farm.
It hurt so much to see him go, but as a student I just didn't have the time or resources to rehab him myself. But he had a good life.
My Dandy ❤️
